...casting out...( ...emarginazione...versione in inglese )
Dear Fellow Travellers,
We live in a country where more than 5 million of our compatriots live a dreadful reality, it is my duty to denounce this and take it to your knowledge, for all to see.
As I wrote some time ago, mine is a strike, a strike of swimming, I will stop swimming
- until full respect for human dignity and the disabled persons’ rights of freedom and autonomy are guaranteed. These are presuppositions to promote their full integration in the family, at school, at work and in society;
- until the invalidating conditions that prevent the development of the person are removed, to enable a disabled person to participate actively in the life of the community, and therefore to plan those measures devoted to the overcoming of marginalization and social exclusion.
This is what happens:
From Corriere della Sera news:
The case of a girl with developmental problems in the province of Nuoro.
She is 24 years old but it is as if she was six, the kindergarten has decided to leave her at home.
The young woman found relief in being together with younger children, but this is no longer possible.
NUORO - Twenty-four years of age but the body and mind of a little girl of six, which do not let her see, hear, speak. It is the story of a young woman from Nuoro that for two years had found an important reason to live in being with children and teachers in a private kindergarten in town. This year instead, the school that had agreed to accept her despite her age, has opposed a polite but firm refusal because of, officially, the large number of enrolments.
EXCLUSION – So, fifteen days ago her mood has changed and also that of her parents, because her daily expectation of leaving home and going to school has been disappointed. She has a teacher paid by her parents and only wanted to spend a few hours of the day hearing others play and talk. She just needs some space and a lot of company but so far no school has agreed to accept her, hiding behind the fact that compulsory schooling no longer exists for her. The only exception is the willingness to accept her by the mayor of Ollolai, Mr Efisio Arbau, but the distance in kilometres is too big. The Social Services Department to the City of Nuoro has offered, as a solution, the stay in a daytime centre for adults, specialized in accommodating the disabled: unacceptable, because despite her date of birth the young woman is physically just a little girl who recognizes children as her fellow creatures.
