Swimming tour of Europa, 5th leg Copenhagen_Malmo

First of all, I’d like to thank Jan Bengtsson, General Manager of http://www.hiso.nu/, Carsten Mortensen, Director of http://www.dhif.dk/ and Carina Polder, a top long distance athlete in the Swedish national team, http://www.openwaterswimming.se/, for their fantastic warm welcome. Also sincere thanks to Grazia Mirabelli, President of http://www.comites.dk/ and Angelo Tajani, journalist with Il Mattino di Napoli for over 20 years, for their contribution and support with the project “Giro d’Europa a nuoto per un mondo senza barriere e senza frontiere” (Swim around Europe for a world without barriers or frontiers)
I set out on the route which brings me to this point, around two years ago. I was looking for an effective and unusual way to communicate difficulties and necessities which aren’t just mine, but are common to all those who live from day to day with a disability. In my case (I had a leg amputated), I’ve lived through the enormous problems encountered in trying to obtain from our national health service, a modern electronic prosthesis. Scientific research has taken giant strides in the last few years, perfecting artificial limbs which are so advanced they allow huge advantages in movement for those who need them, but in Italy they seem to be a mirage. Current legislation in Italy only allows for a series of absurdly dated tariffs which are unchanged since 1992!
This state of affairs, this total disregard for a significant part of the population, must be challenged, and I try to do this by swimming.
In fact, on 1° September I’ll be setting off for the 5th stage of my swim around Europe, from Copenhagen, the Copenhagen Harbour Company, to Malmo on the western Harbour.
The event will be preceded by a Press conference which will be held on 31st August at Malmo Town Hall at 10,00 and another an hour before the start at the Copenhagen Harbour Company.
I’m sure that it will be a day to remember for all those who will be lucky enough to take part in what will be a fantastic party.

Come prima cosa desidero ringraziare di cuore Jan Bengtsson, General Manager della http://www.hiso.nu/ , Carsten Mortensen, dirigente della http://www.dhif.dk/ , e Carina Polder, atleta di punta della nazionale svedese di nuoto di fondo, http://www.openwaterswimming.se/ , per la loro meravigliosa e calda accoglienza.
Come non posso non menzionare Grazia Mirabelli, Presidente della http://www.comites.dk/ , e il giornalista, corrispondente de Il Mattino di Napoli per oltre 20 anni, Angelo Tajani, per il loro contributo ed il loro affetto al progetto “Giro d’ Europa a nuoto per un mondo senza barriere e senza frontiere”.
Il percorso che mi ha portato fin qui inizia all’incirca due anni fa, solo nella mia testa. Cercavo un modo efficace e diverso per comunicare disagi ed esigenze non solo mie ma comuni a quanti vivono quotidianamente la disabilità in un mondo strutturato a misura di normalità. In modo particolare ho vissuto sulla mia pelle, poiché amputato, la difficoltà di ottenere, attraverso il servizio sanitario del nostro Paese, una protesi elettronica di ultima generazione. La ricerca scientifica ha fatto passi da gigante consentendo la messa a punto di presidi protesici così avanzati da consentire grandi facilitazioni motorie a chi è privo di un arto eppure in Italia non se ne tiene conto, mantenendo inalterato un nomenclatore tariffario, che regola appunto la fornitura delle protesi, fermo al 1992.
Questo stato di cose, questa disattenzione nei confronti di una parte della popolazione va evidentemente combattuto ed io cerco di farlo attraverso il nuoto.
Infatti il prossimo 1° settembre ci sarà la V tappa del giro d’ europa a nuoto, da Copenhagen, molo della Copenhagen Harbour Company, a Malmo, the western harbour.
L’ evento sarà preceduto da una conferenza stampa che si terrà il 31 agosto, presso il comune di Malmo, alle 10h00, e da un’ altra che si terrà un’ ora prima della partenza, presso la sede della Copenhagen Harbour Company.
Sono sicuro che sarà una giornata da ricordare per quanti avranno la fortuna di partecipare a quella che sarà una meravigliosa festa.

Channel Crossing

Finished at last! The stretch of sea that frightened me most, which I had imagined unbeatable, dark, stormy at the end, on 31st July I managed to cross it! I hoped to succeed in this challenge, but honestly, when I arrived in Dover and saw the English Channel for the first time, and above all when I felt the temperature (freezing, literally freezing) I admit I was slightly discouraged. Once again though, two extraordinary people managed to encourage and sustain me, Filippo Tassara and Giovanni Giordano. They even swam with me in those freezing waters during the days preceding the crossing. I'm not exagerating if I say that their intelligent and competent assistance determined the success of my crossing. There were moments during those nine hours and fifty minutes in which the cold was so intense that I suffered painful cramps and it was their presence, and my determination not to let them down, that pushed me to the end. To give you an idea of what I suffered, just think that I only reaquired the sensation in my head after two days! I was practically frozen solid!
Apart from the sporting achievement, which fills me with pride, from this experience I'll always keep in my heart the extraordinary human warmth which Filippo and Giovanni transmitted to me, the enthusiasm with which they assisted me and the solidarity they demonstrated for the project which I'm carrying out.
At this stage of the Giro d'Europa, after four steps happily concluded, one thing is blaringly obvious: the people, the associations, and the Institutions which work towards the complete integration of disabled people in society, especially through sport, are really numerous and full of enthusiasm and competence. From them I've learned a great deal and for this reason I'll never stop thanking them. I'm thinking, above all, of those who have been close to me right from the start, il Circolo Canottieri Aniene, Fondazione Roma, and Italbrokers; but I think also of Enrico, Adolfo, Fortunato, Carmelo, Filippo, Giovanni.... and if I've forgotten anyone then that's good! It means that there really are lots of us!

Traversata del Canale della Manica

Filippo Tassara con mio padre poco prima della partenza

Finalmente è andata! Il tratto di mare che più mi spaventava, che immaginavo insormontabile, scuro, agitatissimo alla fine, il 31 luglio, sono riuscito ad attraversarlo! Speravo nella riuscita di questa impresa ma, sinceramente, quando sono arrivato a Dover e ho visto per la prima volta il Canale della Manica e, soprattutto, quando ho potuto provarne la temperatura (ghiacciata, letteralmente ghiacciata) un minimo di scoraggiamento l’ho avvertito…. Anche questa volta, però, due persone straordinarie hanno saputo incoraggiarmi e sostenermi, Filippo Tassara e Giovanni Giordano, addirittura nuotando con me in quelle acque ghiacciate nei giorni precedenti la prova. Non esagero se dico che la loro vicinanza, intelligente e competente, ha determinato il successo della traversata: ci sono stati momenti, durante quelle nove ore e cinquanta minuti, in cui il freddo era talmente intenso da provocarmi dolorosissimi crampi ed è stata la loro presenza, la voglia di non deluderli che mi ha spinto ad arrivare fino alla fine. Per darvi un’idea di quello che ho sofferto, vi basti pensare che ho riacquistato la sensibilità alla testa solo dopo due giorni! In pratica mi sono congelato!!
Di là del risultato sportivo, che comunque mi riempie di orgoglio, di questa esperienza porterò sempre nel cuore la straordinaria carica umana che Filippo e Giovanni hanno saputo trasmettermi, l’entusiasmo con cui hanno voluto sostenermi e la solidarietà da loro fattivamente dimostrata nei confronti del progetto che sto portando avanti.
A questo punto del Giro d’Europa, dopo quattro tappe felicemente concluse, un dato è clamorosamente evidente: le persone, le associazioni e le istituzioni che lavorano per una piena integrazione dei disabili nella società, specialmente attraverso lo sport, sono veramente tante e tutte piene di entusiasmo e competenza. Da loro ho imparato veramente moltissimo e per questo non smetterò mai di ringraziarli. Penso naturalmente a chi mi è vicino fin dal primo momento, il Circolo Canottieri Aniene, la Fondazione Roma e la Italbrokers, ma penso anche ad Enrico, Adolfo, Fortunato, Carmelo, Peppe, Filippo, Giovanni……. E se ho dimenticato qualcuno sono contento: vuol dire che siamo, siete, veramente tanti!!!
