Swimming the seas of the world

(Tiberiade, Israele 1st stage 04 - 09 May 2010)

I’m going to tell you about an experience which will remain indellible in my heart. From 4th to 9th of May I shared emotions, joy, tears and moments of prayer with amazing people, people who are fulfilled by working towards the serenity of their neighbours. I spent five intensive, uninterrupted days and even now, a few days later, I’m the happy prisoner of a beautiful memory.

On the morning of 5th May, together with my father, Ciro, Giovanni Giordano, Filippo Tassara and Piero Abbina to all of whom I owe my profound gratitude for their hard work to ensure the success of the event, I visited the headquarters of Tsad Kadima (in yiddish “a step forward”), an association whose aim is to integrate children with cerebral problems into “normal” society, and to this end, they work with courage and strength, regardless of the religion, creed or ethnic origin of their patients. At the entrance, together with Alessandra Viterbo co founder of the Kibbuts, the teachers and directors and children were waiting to welcome us.

It was a meeting which was full of surprises.
Together with my travelling companions, I was able to witness the passion and selflessness with which the teachers work, sustained by ultra modern tecniques, and above all the joy they expressed in our dialogue.

It was a real lesson to see people who despite living in war time, strive for peace as a necessary part of life.
And spontaneously, I think of our country, Italy, which doesn’t have the extreme conditions of the Holy Land but nonetheless is suffering a different kind of defeat, the closure of the Santa Lucia hospital, an institution for the specialized scientific care and rehabilitaion of neuromotory patients suffering from lesions to the nervous system or muscular skeletal apparatus. The hospital carries out intensive activities of research, science and teaching. I hope that this tragedy can be avoided because it is surely the duty of any civilized country to maintain excellent facilities such as this one.

Having left Tsad Kadima, we went to the Italian Embassy in Tel Aviv, where we were received by Ambassador Luigi Mattiolo and the Minister Counsellor Gabriele Altana who expressed encouragement for the event, guaranteeing their participation.

In the afternoon, we were joined by Paolo Luccardi and Nora Alkabes, and headed for Tiberiade in Galilea where, with Filippo and Giovanni, we hired a boat to assist the first training session in the lake.
And at last, here we are on Friday 7th May, the big day!
Wake up at 05.45 local time (Israel is an hour ahead). After breakfast, we left for Cafer nahum, where my swim would begin and where a RAI TV troupe were waiting for us with Orna Shimoni, the founder of the Beit Eyal Kibbuts, a person whose strength and gentleness are unique, together with her collaborators. There were four boats, one occupied by the RAI and one by my fantastic team, composed of Ciro, Giovanni, Filippo and Orna who encouraged me until the last stroke.

During the crossing I didn’t feel like I was swimming, there was a surreal atmosphere; the smooth lake seemed designed by a great impressionist and, although there were many of us, the silence surrounded everything, interrupted only by the light breeze. We all felt extraordinarily close in a place which is not only beautiful but which has profound historical and spiritual significance.

Having covered 16.00 km in three hours and thirty nine minutes, we arrived at Ein Gev, greeted with smiles and friendly hugs by our friends. Amongst these I want to particularly thank Yoel, Alessandro’s son, Piero, Paolo, Gabriele, Nora, Eyal, Noah, Shoham, Amos, Idan, Yvonnes, Yvette, Donata, Simonetta, Edna, Luigi, Marco and the RAI team who, with Claudio Pagliata, I thank from my heart for having transmitted the message that a society without barriers and frontiers means no more wars, no more suffering and above all no emargination.

I embrace with gratitude and affection my team which includes Filippo Tassara, Giovanni Giordano and Ciro, my father. And my thoughts go inevitably to Rome, to the Circolo Canottieri Aniene from where everything started: thanks to President Malagò, thanks to Professor Emanuele Emmanuele of the Fondazione Roma, thanks to Marco Zilia, thanks to Piero Abbina because once again all of you have had faith in me.
On this occasion I also had the support of the University of the Technion in Haifa and with extreme pride from Selex Galileo. My heartfelt thanks to all of you.
I conclude this unforgettable adventure with a quotation from an illustrious jew, Thomas Mann, who wrote “Interest in illness is always and only another way of expressing an interest in life”

Goodbye until the next stage.
Affectionately.

Ci SIAMO!!!!!

Kefar Nahum

Its happening! Next week we’re off to Israel!

Ein Gev

When i started planning this next swim, so long ago now, i could hardly believed it would be possible. Instead, once again, the motivation and enthusiasm of the peopleinvolved were able to surprise me and keep convincing me that, when it comes to disabilities, there are still a lot of folk with a huge desire to get involved and make things happen. There are many reasons that led me to choose Israelfor the next swim. This land portrays, despite its travails and its many contradictions, the search for a coexistence of different souls. This land portrays the attempt to unite painful diversities. This land portrays the symbol of wanted and needed peace which is the fundamental prerequisite for a serene and fuilfilling life. In Israel moreover, the scientific research in bio-engineering work is truly advanced: next-generationimplants, ever closer to the physiologically capabilities of our natural limbs are an important asset for the disabled. Israel is one of the world' s leaders in this area. I will never tire of repeating how important the organisation and infrastructure of our communities are for a disabled person: accessible public transport, useable footpaths, supportfor families, the opportunity to lead a full and efficient working life, the opportunity to best develop one' s skills and, not least, when possible, toparticipate in leisure activities and sports. These minimal conditions can really change your life. My battle and yours is this: the building of a hospitable and convivial community for everyone - without distinction. Those associations wich raise the awareness of the difficulties of the disabled by touching the public conscience, even culturally, contribute enormously to help win our battle. I praise and thank those associations. I have found in sport and in swimming, in particular, a means of reaching out to as many people as possible: i will continue therefore as long as you will wish to support me, to swim around Europe and the World. On May 7th, i will attempt swimming acrossthe Lake of Tiberias, from Kefar Nahum to Ein Gev. This trip, wich begins May 4th, willallow me to get to know the wonderful land of Israel. I will be accompanied by some extraordinary people: Piero Abbina, Antonello Manetti, Nora Alkabes, Filippo Tassara, Giovanni Giordano e Ciro Cimmino. These special people embody my stenght and my pride. This next swim will be a very special event: i look forward to meeting many extraordinary people in this wonderful land and i look forward to moving all together along a path of mutual support, solidarity and team spirit.

Spettabile Selex Galileo

Salvatore Cimmino

For the kind attention of Selex Galileo

I would like to thank you from my heart for the contribution which, following the request of the External Relations Director, you have granted me to sustain my swim from the Galilee sea to Kefar Nahum in Ein Gev, an initiative which is part of the project "Swim the seas around the world" and which will take place on May 7th 2010.
I am profoundly grateful that you are participating in this project which is very dear to meand which i intend to dedicate not only to the Circolo Canottieri Aniene and the Fondazione Roma who have been by my side throughout, allowing me to do everything i have done so far, but also to my colleagues who have encouraged me over the past years and given me strenght.
In these last few years, thanks to the comprehension and enthusiasm of my company, i have been able to inform many people who otherwise i would not have know how to reach, of a specific problem, the provision of state of the art prosthetics to amputees. This is a problem which regards more generally the whole world of the disabled, where many endure problems, fatigue and emargination.
I did this by swimming - and i' m certainly not a swimmer - but i did it thanks to the fact, as often happens in life, with the help of many, it' s easier to reach objectives, in fact nothing is impossible!
The world of sport has welcomed me with solidarity and interest and through sporting values a project developed which allowed me and still allows me, to share ideas which, as a disabled person, are particularly important to me.
I speak of sharing as i believe that we can only reach the full integration of disabled people with if all civil society participates. All men and women who like me, since birth or due to a subsequent event, findthemselves facing physical of psychological difficulties, live in a state of limbo, waiting to be freed from the cage which imprisons them, blighting their existence. For this reason i believe that we have to intervene with stimulation and reminders. You can' t eliminate the disability but you can free the potentialities which haven' t been cancelled.
This is why it' s so important for us disabled to "be" in the world, to try to make a difference to processes of socialization and integration, to testify to the value of diversity, to fight for our right.
Today, technology in the field of prosthetics has reached amazing results. New appliances allow a quality of life which was impossible up to a few years ago, reducing many problems related to poor posture or incorrect walking.
Unfortunately in Italy, unlike other European countries, these instruments aren' t provided by the national health service, except in the face of long and complicated bureaucratic battles. The instrument which regulates the provision of prosthetics hasn' t been updated since 1992 and so
doesn' t take into account fundamental progress obtained in recent years. it' s a case of cultural short sightedness in a country like Italy which, as far as regulations go, boasts advanced laws and at the level of local institutions, pays a great deal of attention to assistance for the disabled.
The unexpected and very welcome gesture by Selex Galileo, pushes me to continue in my efforts with maximum concentration and dedication, further encouraged by the will to serve my company.

In this spirit, thank you.
